Associate Environment Artist

Responsibilities:

Reporting to the Environment Lead, the Associate Environment Artists is responsible for creating realistic models, textures and environments. This role will work alongside the Environment Lead to deliver strong levels and environment props that are in line with the project’s technical constraints and artistic direction.

 

Essential Functions:

  • Work closely with Environment Lead, environment artists and designers

  • Create, edit, and optimize realistic detailed 3d environments

  • Understand the requirements and constraints of the game design, engine and platform – creatively solve challenging budget and technical limitations to ensure effective implementation of evocative environments

  • Create a variety of models (structures, terrain, props) from photo reference and concept

  • Build levels and worlds in game using a library of assets

  • Communicate and collaborate effectively with the development team

  • Quickly learn and adapt to new tools, processes, and pipelines

  • Working with your assigned mentor, meet training and coaching expectations and assignments

  • Implement and incorporate feedback from Art Director and Leads into work

  • Assist with optimisation and debugging to fix the issues raised by testers

  • Fully realise a space with the assets available to tell an interesting and varied story

  • Reference game design documents to develop an understanding of the environments, objectives, atmospheres, story and style of the project

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Basic game engine experience - Unreal4, Id Tech (Radiant) and/or Hammer

  • Demonstrated modeling skill and experience in a major 3d package (3DS Max or Maya)

  • Photoshop familiarity & competency, prefer basic understanding of shader creation

  • Friendly, helpful, and collaborative in a team based environment; self-motivated, results-oriented self-starter with a strong artistic vision

  • Effective verbal and written communication skills, with a basic ability to communicate visually utilizing traditional media

  • Basic awareness of game engine budgets, limits, and memory constraints

  • Ability to create interesting, detailed and visually appealing environments

  • Ability to adapt to new processes and pipelines

  • Understanding of composition visual storytelling

  • Understanding of Physically Based Rendering systems

  • Familiarity with data management software (such as Perforce) is desirable

  • Basic gameplay and level design knowledge is desirable

  • Knowledge of optimisation techniques (e.g. 3D Studio Max)
