Associate Technical Artist

Reporting to the Technical Art Director, the Associate Technical Artist is responsible for setting up and maintaining the art production workflow. He/she is responsible for the monitoring and optimization of the assets' database, including texture, mesh and GPU budgets in the game worlds. An important part of the job involves keeping up-to-date with the changes in the game technologies, as well as implementing new techniques and tools, in order to improve the artistic productivity. 


Essential Functions:

  • Participates in departmental meetings to share personal ideas for workflow efficiency

  • Responsible for animating cloth on 3D character models in a realistic manner for the game.

  • Animation Bug fixing

  • Create character control rigs and deformation systems.

  • Work closely with other departments to influence UI design to be as intuitive as possible for the end user.

  • Develop the technical side of asset creation, build tools to automate production and enhance quality, develop complex deformation systems, create texture processing systems, and simulate engine features in our asset creation packages.

  • Prototype and research new software and techniques to aid art asset creation.

  • Work alongside multiple departments to develop new techniques for artists, iterating on complex features until we can hand over a polished system to the end users.

  • Interact closely with animators and technical artists to maintain and improve our proprietary animation tools.

  • Isolating and debugging environment technical issues in certain game world/s;

  • Profiling and optimizing mesh and texture budgets together with the FPS;

  • Monitoring and keeping the asset database clean and organized;

  • Researching new techniques and tools, testing and implementing them into the production pipeline.


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Excellent organizational skills

  • Ability to think creatively in resolving technical challenges and limitations

  • Be able to anticipate the needs of the artists in order to streamline their productivity

  • Strong problem-solving skills. Ability to work in a self-directed manner and to make timely, well-thought out decisions.

  • Experience in scripting and programming languages (Python, C#, WPF etc.).

  • Advanced knowledge of 3D Studio Max and/or Maya.

  • Knowledge of Houdini is a definite plus.

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills. Must be able to work closely in a team setting with other departments.
